Grief is a deep feeling, it doesn’t change you instead it just reveals you.
Namaste!…Today we’ll look at a very important aspect of life. This blog brings me a lot of satisfaction to share, the impact of negative feelings and emotions on our body, it with you. Its far from finish but a very comprehensive tool for our daily life. So with lots of hope that it would be useful for you all, lets begin!
A little background before we move…my father was a great figure, my 1st Guru, man who taught me kindness, a satisfying way to live, to fight for right, and most importantly – never give up. And these early lesson are foundation of whatever I got in my life. One day we all were shaken by surprise to know that he got cancer, that too at last stage. When we are faced by impossible then we often try to run away, most difficult part was to see the weak face that I used to see as strength. Anyway, the point is, one day he asked me “I always did right, never did bad to anyone and at best I replied back to someone who challenged me. Still why I got such a disease, Cancer!!”. He was indeed in exceptional health & strength as per his age, his food was right & disciplined, and possessed overall good personality. Later I came to know about more similar people. Since then its been my challenge to understand why people get different diseases, are they pure luck? Is there a way to understand the pattern & stop, or we can only run behind doctors to know one day that we are defeated?
Anyway, there is good article on connecting dots between physical & emotional health. Lets start here understanding how emotions are involved in creating issues in our body. I’ll write separately on Cancer (that’s 2nd challenge and fight is on). I would be very pleased if you can comment your views- if it did help you in some way. or if you can add something, or if I can help you somewhere. Lets look at our emotion, and how they impact on our body.
Intro: Emotions are an integral part of our daily life. There are positive, there are negative emotions. They also vary in magnitude and hence impact- sometimes mediate, sometimes very high. These are often driven by subconscious beliefs and long-forgotten experiences, and are a powerful force that can aid or degenerate our health.
Our emotional body is strongly linked with your immune, digestive, cardiovascular, and nervous systems. Emotions are our feeling of energy in motion. Different emotions have different frequencies. When negative feelings are not expressed, they can contribute to physical illness over time. Toxic feelings and thoughts lead to a toxic body, while positive, healthy thoughts and attitudes relax our bodies, giving us more energy and zest for life. Even the conservative Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that 85 percent of all diseases have an emotional element.
Think about the last time you really felt stressed. How did your body feel? Did you begin to lose sleep, tense your muscles more often, and generally ‘feel’ unhealthy? That’s because your body was becoming more unbalanced. Now think, what if this keep happening more often, more tension than recovery!! The secret is understanding that the relationship between mind and body goes two ways. Psychoneuro-immunology is the study of how emotions impact your immune system, health and well-being. This startling new awareness has resulted in the emergence of a whole new field of medicine called ‘Energy-psychology‘.
Reason : Powerful emotions such as pain, fear, grief, disappointment, panic, anxiety & anger, shock our body like an electrical charge, causing lesions along your neural pathways. This disrupts our body’s natural energy flow. Just as mind heals the body, it can also be a source of pain and disease. Studies show strong links between stress and diseases like diabetes, heart disease, hernias and gastro-related problems. Energy has to move. If an emotion isn’t expressed (outward movement), it is suppressed (inward movement). Suppressed emotions uses up a lot of energy, which robs your body of energy that should be used for vital functions.
Emotion’s Storage: Below are some of the examples that shows which emotions are stored in which area –
ARMS: The right arm signifies giving and the left signifies receiving. (Generally, the right side of the body is connected to the paternal, and the left is maternal). It pints to what or who are you carrying?
ARMPITS: Storage unit of what we don’t want to see anymore (Emotional)
BACK: Questioning life’s relation to support (who supports us,etc.). Confrontation for supporting yourself through love.
BLADDER: Emotional resistance to life.
BREASTS: Nurturing the Self (or lack of)
CALVES: Moving forward. Not dealing with past issues or patterns.
COLON: Not going with the flow of life..emotional resistance to change.
EYES: How do you see life? Is it according to your true self?
FEET: How we walk in this world. In which direction are we walking?
JOINTS: Flexibility or not in your situations and your attachments to them.
HANDS: Represent holding on or letting go.
HEART: Not listening to our true self through our feelings
HIPS: General support. When they slip out, it generally relates to an imbalance in how you are relating to life. Feeling the lack of love and support.
JOINTS: Flexibility to or in your situations
KIDNEYS: Holding on to angers or resentments. Being pissed off.
KNEES: Seeing life as unsupported. Inside knee; Community, job, friends. Outside knee; personal issues.
NERVES: Sensitivity towards a situation not acknowledged in the conscious mind.
OVARIES: Very sensitive past issues about creativity. Guilt.
SINUS: Confusion. Needing to let go or make decisions on a mental level. (Sinus infections are anger in the situation. Headaches are contributed to not making a decision. Migraines are the daddy of headaches of knowing what decision to make and not making it.)
STOMACH: Carries recognition of digesting life, or not.
Here are some of points to consider when understanding impact of emotions on our body-
- According to Dr David Suzuki, condensed molecules from breath exhaled from verbal expressions of anger, hatred, and jealousy, contain toxins. Accumulated over 1 hr, these toxins are enough to kill 80 guinea pigs!
- Resentment and bitterness are like acid. They cause inflammation and pain. Stubborn, inflexible resentment goes to the knees, shoulders, and joints–the parts of your body that are designed to be open and flexible.
- Negative emotions have a dense, slower vibration. They are ‘heavier’, so they gravitate to the lower parts of your body. Your legs, calves and feet store much of your trauma, resentment, jealousy, and emotional pain, both past and present.
- Emotions of faith, gratitude, and joy resonate within pituitary area of head, which is thought to be a conduit to universal energies.
- Unconditional love resonates at the same frequency as ultra-violet light, the highest visible frequency where Thymus gland resonates.
- Since body/mind/spirit are all connected, negative emotions reflect in the face and changes the appearance of eyes, skin texture, color, tension & texture etc.
- Shame has the most devastating effect, followed by guilt, apathy, grief, fear, anxiety, craving, anger and hate.
- It doesn’t help to hold back, hide or deny your emotions. The very nature of energy is movement. When you repress or control your feelings, their energy can’t flow outward properly and dissipate naturally. You may think you have controlled your feeling, but the energy is still at work in your body.
- Anger damages the liver and gall bladder. Anger toward another person is like taking poison and expecting someone else to die!
- Negative emotions tax your spleen, liver and adrenal glands and use up nutrients the body needs to sustain itself. The result is fatigue, auto-immune disorders, and lowered vitality.
Chemicals: As the electrical current of an emotion travels along your neural pathways, it triggers a release of chemical proteins called neuro-peptides (NPs). Each emotion has its own individual frequency. In response to each specific emotional frequency, your body releases corresponding NP’s. NP’s communicate chemical messages throughout your body, creating physiological responses. Adrenalin, hormones, oxytoxin, endorphins–these are all examples of NPs. Each neuro-peptide creates such specific biological responses, that physical symptoms can actually pinpoint what’s really happening in your unconscious mind! For instance, happiness, joy, laughter, and orgasms cause the release of natural opiates called endorphins. These powerful opiates make you feel good. They boost your immune system, relax muscles, elevate your mood, and dampen pain
Adrenalin and cortisol release when you experience fear, anxiety or stress. They cause your heart to beat faster, and blood vessels to dilate, making your skin flush. Rapid, shallow breathing ensues. Muscles tighten, especially around the stomach and shoulder area. A slight sweat may break out. The purpose of adrenalin is to place your body in a high-alert rapid-response flight-or-flight state. In emergencies, this is beneficial, as it aids escape. But, over a long period, adrenalin can be very damaging to your body. It suppresses your immune system, impairs digestion, uses up vital vitamins and minerals, causes pain and stiffness, makes your body acidic resulting in inflammation or body odor, and drains vitality
And, as with many NP’s, Adrenalin is highly addictive. Body gets accustomed to over-stimulation over time, and eventually needs higher dose of adrenaline to maintain higher energy levels. Those who had history of extended periods of adrenal overload, such as those who grew up in homes with an achoholic or critical parent, or those who experienced physical or verbal abuse, will often unconsciously attract dramas or crises in their lives to feed their adrenalin dependancy. Or, you may crave sugar or foods to which you are allergic, as these also stimulate the adrenal gland.

Release : It is very important to allow your emotions to come to the surface. Below are few ways to bring those harmful suppressed emotions on surface and release.
- 1st you understand that its natural to have negative emotions but then we must dispose them also. Like we have food, we keep good nutrients inside body and the waste is excreted.
- But continue to holding onto them is your choice. Situations can only present it in front of you, or at best drag you into it, BUT do you really need to have them and keep them!!
- Accept, take responsibility and work for resolution. Seek help if you need.
- analyze yourself and find – where these negative emotions are stored in your body? Which areas in the body are impacted and what are the emotions that you need to deal with?
- Notice which direction this feeling is moving. It has to move – feelings move all the time. For example, I want you to think about being nervous. When a person is nervous, they normally say “I have butterflies in my tummy”.
- Write down – emotions that you need to deal with, incidents that contribute majorly to these emotions, which areas of the body is impacted. These monsters are only good as you let them be. Face them, finish them.
- Take deep breaths, inhale- fresh air, positive emotions and exhale- impurities, negative emotions. People in emotional or physical pain tend to breathe very shallow. Body becomes acidic when deprived of oxygen, which reduces your ability to cope with stress.
- Connect to a particular memory. Place hand on your body where you feel the emotion. You cannot truly let go of your emotions until you feel them fully, utilize your breath, intention, and even touch them if required to release.
- Listening to music, or saying a releasing statement aloud.
- Once the emotion has been fully acknowledged, i:e. you have felt it as deeply as possible, you will experience a release of built-up energy.
- Physical exercise, strenuous labour, or sports activities help to dissipate emotional energy and release it harmlessly. Physical activities trigger the release of endorphins to make you feel good. Exercise helps expel physical and emotional toxins.
- Smile, even if you don’t feel it. The act of smiling changes your body chemistry. You’ll feel happier!
- Laughter is also a great emotional release! Laughter releases chemical endorphins to make you feel happy and relaxed. You might even feel to cry and shake or laugh, but it will feel like being freed. . This is a great time to tap or massage either the point of your body that feels uncomfortable or various points that relate to the issue you are working on. You can then move, shake, dance, or simply sit or lie down to allow your body to complete the process. The most important thing is to listen to your body and go with what it says.
- Meditation is an ideal tool to achieve serenity and balance between your brain’s left and right hemispheres. Meditation slows your brain waves to an alpha state of 7.8-11htz. This provides a direct link to your subconscious mind. It’s rather like hacking into the universe’s software. Meditation directly opens you to wisdom and inspiration far beyond analytical modes.
- Like Meditation, any spiritual or energy healing like Reiki, works like a blessing.
Disclaimer: This is purely addressing these issues on a personal, Spiritual level only. You are always advised to seek care from a licensed medical professional.
Note: While we should ALWAYS seek professional medical help for any illness that enters in our lives, it may be very helpful to check out the meaning of these health issues from Spiritual or emotional point of view. We need to understand what our body is trying to show us. The list of diseases due to emotional impact is a short one due to space.
