Reiki – Know Truth and Misconceptions about Reiki

Reiki is one of the most searched esoteric keywords on google, and one of best thing to earn for overall growth and health. While a lot of good things and knowledgeable stuffs are written, it would be surprising that some has written negative about Reiki as well. So it can be very exciting but confusing as well at times, for a beginner or even intermediate.

There has been some gaps due to how Reiki’s knowledge spread from Japan to West and then again to rest of world. Dr Mikao Usui’s original and authenticated work was carried by Takata from the west, while the Reiki institutions and masters were destroyed in world-war II, Takata also had to change it a bit for westerners to adopt it. Further more originality was lost in translation, another layer of miscommunication is added when Reiki practitioners try to explain Reiki to anyone with a scientific background. I hope this post can help clarify some common doubts and misconceptions about Reiki.

Reiki is a universal divine energy, provided by the same almighty nature that governs the entire world. Surely Dr Mikao Usui gave it a name, identity and process for learning but such an art has been practiced for thousands of years. And this supreme is all love, love and nothing else, rest we get for what we do in our life and others around us. Hence Reiki is a blessing to us human, that can heal at spiritual, emotional, mental and physical level but never be wrong.

Myths and misconceptions about Reiki:

  1. Reiki is a religion– Reiki is neither a religion nor is against any religion. Someone has reached me for guidance, as he heard that Reiki challenges, opposes, or conflicts with a belief in Jesus Christ. Lets be clear- Reiki does not oppose, challenge, or contradict the teachings of Jesus or any religion as much as i know. On the contrary, Reiki is in harmony with the love and light that is Christ, even Jesus of Nazareth was a healer and the Bible is full of stories about his healing miracles. There is nothing to believe in Reiki, it doesn’t require you to change your beliefs and you don’t have to worship anyone while practicing Reiki. I saw many practitioners of Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, Shintoism, and Buddhism to embrace it for spiritual healings, growth and well-being.
  2. Reiki does not involve physical touchreiki distance1Although now most of Reiki healers hold their hands just above the receiver’s body, the original practice of Reiki has always involved direct contact and physical touch. Although distance is used to avoid any comfortableness in the receiver due to touch, legal implications and distraction, but they feel it to be equally useful with distant healing. However, there is nothing wrong in any of these.
  3. Reiki is not real– Few specially strong believers of science, who claim that Reiki is not real, approach the subject from the perspective of “if you can’t see it, it is not real”. Went far enough to call it superstitious or a placebo effect. Einstein, most respected scientist, proved that everything is energy. The lower the vibration the more solid the mass, the higher the vibration the less solid the mass, with the highest vibrations being invisible. We can stay many days without food which is prominent and solid mass, liquid/water is need to even survive few hours but Oxygen which is invisible, is need every few seconds to stay alive. We use very useful but invisible forms of energy everyday –electricity, radio waves, internet etc. Now we can see our all 7 layers of Aura(energy body) through Aura-photography, and diagnostic tools like electrocardiogram helps measures the electrical activity of the heart. Hence, we do have an stronger energy body, in addition to our physical body.
  4. Only few select people can learn Reiki and be good at it- Although some might have a natural inclination or gift towards holistic healing arts and they can quickly learn or become very good healers, but anyone can learn Reiki. The beauty of Reiki is in its simplicity, and anyone can learn how to do it in just a few days. Since Reiki is giving by the nature, hence like sunlight and moon, it is made to be with everyone. Like any art, practice makes perfect, it something to be experienced by oneself.
  5. Reiki is similar to Chakra Cleansing– Many people associate Reiki with working on the Chakra energy centers of the body. While Reiki may be beneficial for Chakra clearing, in reality, the Indian concept of Chakras was never a part of the original Reiki teaching, but was rather added onto the Japanese healing art of Reiki sometime after the 1970s. Any Chakra balancing and clearing techniques taught as a part of Reiki training, is extra information that was not a part of the technique developed by the Usui sensei.
  6. Reiki can be learnt online– Reiki is a hands-on healing art and the process of teaching Reiki involves certain elements that simply cannot be demonstrated or done online. You can certainly learn history of Reiki or various Reiki concepts online, but you may soon discover that when you try using Reiki, it will likely be only marginally effective. (After an online course you may get the “It felt relaxing”, type of a reaction from your clients, as opposed to, “Wow, this was amazing!” that you can expect after learning Reiki from a credentialed teacher at an in-person Reiki seminar.)
  7. Reiki can be harmful– Aahh! very unfortunately and even surprising for me to hear and read from few people who claimed that Reiki has blocked chakras, and that symbols are harmful. Reiki is like a water thrown on the ground, the holes or sides which are down will take as much is needed and rest will just move,it can never be harmful. A divine energy can never be harmful..guess I said enough on this.
