Karma – Meaning & different Types

Karma

Whether you are religious or not, you are in any continent or religion, but its a very high probability that you must have heard the word ‘Karma’  somehow somewhere. Its not new to hear karma across anywhere on internet irrespective of religion and region, people must have heard about Karma, whether believe or not and whether really understood or not.

The word ‘Karma‘ (कर्म), or Deeds in english, is a term from Hinduism and comes from the Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language which is a basis of most of spiritual aspects of Indian system. From Yoga to Vedas and many other scriptures were also written in Sanskrit.

Lord Krishn says in Bhagvad Gita’s Chapter 2, Shloka 22 :

“वासांसि जीर्णानि यथा विहाय
नवानि गृह्णाति नरोऽपराणि |
तथा शरीराणि विहाय जीर्णा
न्यन्यानि संयाति नवानि देही ||”

Which is translated as – As a person sheds the worn-out garments and put-on new ones, similary, at the time of death, the soul casts off its worn-out body and enters a new one.

In Sanskrit, Karma means action, it refers to our past actions. the reference to Karma is found in all forms of Indian religion stemming from Hinduism – Buddhism, Jainism etc.

Scope of Karma :

One  important thing to note here is – Karma isn’t only about our action done physically, but it also refers to our intent. So bad karma isn’t earned only when you actually do wrong to someone, but even if you think and plan yet you’ve earned some part of that potential Karma.

Ok, let me explain it. Karma refers to the activities carried out by the body. Probably this is the reason of confusion and if you’re thinking this yet you’re right.

But, the body is also of three types.

a) Gross (sthula) – physical body.

b) Subtle (Suksham) – connects gross and casual bodies.

c) Casual (Karana).
Details on these will be given separately as we don’t want to divert. But the purpose is to tell since we ahve mlutiple bodies so each of them will create karmas.

Types of Karma :

Karma are classified based on its occurrence of impact.

1. Sanchit Karma : Sanchit means accumulated, and hence Sanchit karma refers to all the accumulated karmas from our previous or past lives. The one thing unique about Sanchit karma is that it can be changed.

2. Prarabdha Karma : This refers to the ongoing actions or Karmas. the portion of Sanchita Karma which will present itself in this lifetime. It is the agreed upon karmic debt of the lifetime you are experiencing right now. The faster you work on your karma in this lifetime the more past life debts will keep unraveling until all of Sanchita Karma is dissolved. These Karma created by actions in the present life will be added to our Sanchita Karma.

3. Aagami Karma : It is the Karmic Map that is going to come as a result of the merits and demerits of present actions of our current life, just like we plant a tree and due to that certain fruits are going to come in future. These Karma being expected in our future life will be added to our Prarabdha Karma.

4. Kriyamana Karma : Kariyamana karmas are our daily and instant karma created in this lifetime due to our free actions. It  is the most intense form of karma, the one we see in our daily lives, where we have immediate consequences.

Karma’s relation with Astrology :

Astrology or Jyotish works on the analysis of Horoscope of the native created at the time of birth. In simple words, it is the Map of the sky over the place of birth at the time of birth. The predictive or Phalit  part of Astrology analyses the impact of planets on our life and these planets are given the degree of good or bad is due to our Sanchit karma, the past karma of the person. ostly important Saturn is the judge of our Karmas and along with Saturn Rahu & Ketu denotes past life so analysis of these planets along with overall condition of Horoscope would give idea on our Sanchit karmas and also  the karma we will deal with , i:e. Prarabdha karma.

So, the natal horoscope what we call Rashi Chart or D(1) in itself, is nothing but indicator of native’s past life as the newborn children has not done any karma but just carrying over past karma due to which he/she is born at the time, place and environment with those potentials.

For the advance seekers and learners of astrology, the Shastiamsa- D(60) chart shows the Sanchit Karma and spiritual aspects of life. It will show the root cause of problems seen in D(1).
