History :
Kartik Purnima is a very auspicious day and is known due to multiple mythological reasons.
Tulsi Vivah- On this very day, Lord Vishnu married to devi Vrinda, who is known in the form of Tulsi. The ceremony was known as “Tulsi Vivah. Tulsi Vivah generally begins on the day of Prabodhini Ekadashi and ends on the day of Kartik Purnima. According to the Hindu scriptures, Tulsi Vivah can be celebrated on any feasible day between the Ekadashi and Kartik Purnima, in the Hindu kartik month. A majority of people, perform the marriage rituals of Goddess Tulsi with Lord Shaligram, representation of Lord Vishnu, on the day of Kartik Purnima.
It is also belive the Lord Vishnu had taken the Fish incarnation (Matsya-avtar) to save the world, on this very day.
Again this day is also known as the “Birthday of Lord Kartikeya”, son of Lord Shiv. He is known as the god of war.
Also on this very day, Lord Shiv has killed a famous demon named Tripurasun. Hence this day is also called as Tripuri and Tripurari Poornima.
Kartik Purnima comes few days after Diwali. It is also called as “Dev Diwali” in many places of India, because when Lord Shiv killed the demon Tripurasun, who was tormenting the demigods (Devtas), they declared this day as the festival of lights.
Duration
& Timing : The day of Kartik Purnima celebration begins
on the day of Prabodhini Ekadashi also known as Devuthana Ekadashi. Ekadashi means 11th
day of lunar month while the Purnima falls on the 15th day of the
lunar month. Since Kartik Purnima starts on Ekadashi or 11th day of
Kartik-Purnima and completes on the Purnima or 15th day of Kartik,
hence the entire celebration goes for the 5 days.
If
Moon is on Kritika Nakshatra (constellation) and if the Sun is on Vishakha Nakshatra
on this day, then it forms a yoga called “Padma Yoga”, which has great
importance.
Significance of Kartik Purnima :
The auspicious ceremonies performed on this day are likely to bring joy and happiness to the family. It is believed that worshipping Lord Vishnu and performing the bath in ganga or any holy palce on this day, blesses the devotees with great fortune.
Also any charitable act on this day is believed to bring benefits and blessings equal to the performance of ten yagyas.
After Maha Shivratri, the day of Tripuri Poornima is considered very auspicious for Lord Shiva followers. Devotees also perform ‘Rudrabhishek’ also in their houses. On this day temples of Lord Shiva are brightly illuminated.

Below are considered as rituals to be performed on this very auspicious day :
§ It is considered as very sacred taking a sacred bath at places of pilgrimage,
known as ‘Kartik Snan’, at the time of sunrise and moonrise.
§ Devotees generally observe fast on this day and recite the Satyanarayan
Vrat Katha after performing Rudrabhishek.
§ Lord Vishnu is worshipped with flowers, diyas and incense sticks.
§ Kartik Purnima Mela is organized in Pushkar, known as Pushkar fair,
during the Kartik month. This fair concludes on the day of Kartik Purnima with
devotees taking the sacred dip on the Pushkar Lake for seeking Salvation.
Kartik Purnima, in the ongoing year, will fall on November
19. However, the Purnima tithi will begin a day before, that is, November 18.
